Scam warning – Church of England congregations in the village have been warned to ignore scam emails, purporting to come from the bishop or from local vicar Mike Bisset. In the parish newsletter the Rev Bisset says local clergy and senior leaders never ask for money or gift vouchers unsolicited.
Crime increase – Crime increased in the area in June when the lockdown was eased latest figures show. In the Chalfont police area, which includes Penn, 113 crimes were reported – 46 involving violence or sex offences. In the Chepping Wycombe police area, which includes Tylers Green and Hazlemere, 95 crimes were recorded. Anti-social behaviour was the most common crime with 29 recorded cases.
Lucky escape – With woodland tinder dry because of the recent hot spell, a group partying in Common Wood, Penn at the weekend left a bonfire smouldering. Observers said it was “sheer luck” a major fire did not follow.
Early start – Refuse collectors began work at 6am in the village this week so they could finish early in order to avoid the worst of the heat. So far this week temperatures have topped 30 degrees centigrade for five days in succession.
Village Show – A reduced version of the Penn and Tylers Green Village Show will take place on the front common on 13 September, the same day as the Village Care Open Gardens event.
Floral finds – Bee orchids and pyramidal orchids have been recorded this summer in Farther Barn Field, alongside Common Wood, Penn, for the first time.
Cable laying – Road works throughout the village in recent weeks are mainly as a result of an ultra-fast broadband cable being laid. The system is expected to go live in the autumn.
Hot victory – Penn and Tylers Green Cricket Club’s 1st XI beat Bourne End by 76 runs in temperatures reaching the mid-30s centigrade at French Meadow on Saturday. Next Saturday (15th) they host Denham.
Soccer history – Penn and Tylers Green Football Club used its new floodlights for the first time on 3 August when the club’s under-18s played Burnham in a friendly…the first match ever under floodlights in the village.
