Coronavirus update

  • The rapid rise in Covid infections in our immediate area was shown in the latest figures yesterday. In the week to Monday (21st) there were 534 new cases in the Wycombe area, which includes Tylers Green and Hazlemere, compared to 368 the week before. In the Chiltern area, which includes Penn, there were 195 new cases compared to 172 the week before; and in South Bucks (Beaconsfield) there were 289 new cases compared to 134 the previous week.
  • Buckinghamshire NHS Trust said yesterday it will be opening a specialist clinic at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in the new year to support the increasing number of patients in the county suffering with Long Covid, a condition that leaves a minority of coronavirus victims with symptoms such as brain fog, anxiety, depression, breathlessness and fatigue. The trust said 58 Covid patients were being treated in hospitals in the county yesterday, compared to 25 four weeks ago.
  • Wexham Park Hospital in Slough has temporarily suspended all general visiting in the interests of safety of patients and staff. It says it will do all it can to facilitate online and telephone communications.
  • A local gift shop chain, forced to closed for its busiest week of the year, has criticised the tier 4 lockdown proposals as “shambolic, inconsistent and ill-thought” in a notice posted on its doors. Mike Adams, managing director of Chesham based Temptation, with shops in Amersham, Beaconsfield and Windsor wrote: “Apparently it is perfectly alright for people to continue to trek around the High Street, buying from coffee shops, supermarkets, hardware stores, pharmacies, garden centres and so much more…but you would somehow be risking the health of the nation by buying your friends and family a Christmas gift from a gift shop.”  The company has started an online winter sale on its website.
  • The Potters Arms at Winchmore Hill is taking orders for a takeaway roast turkey lunch on Christmas Day. Call 01494 726222 for details. The Hit or Miss in Penn Street is making arrangements to deliver a New Year’s Eve three course dinner in the immediate area. See its website for menu and prices.  The Squirrel at Penn Street has a take away menu for customers to ring and collect. Call 01494 711291 for details or see its Facebook page.
  • Slough, a Covid hotspot, yesterday received the go-ahead to appoint eight more Covid officers, bringing its total to 16.  The officers work with police to enforce Covid restrictions and visit businesses to give advice on regulations.
