Coronavirus update

  • Latest figures indicate the number of new coronavirus cases continues to rise locally. Last week (up to Sunday 8 November) there were 758 new cases in Buckinghamshire compared with 627 the week before – an increase of 131. The county total of 5,402 confirmed cases is lower than its neighbours however. In Oxfordshire, for instance, it’s 7,992 while in Berkshire it’s 9,887. Three people died from Covid in Buckinghamshire hospitals at the weekend, the first recorded deaths from the virus in the county for five weeks.
  • The local ambulance service said the  NHS 111 service is very busy with people inquiring about Covid-19 and asked people to consider finding out information about symptoms, self-isolation and treatment online. The information can be found on nhs.uk/coronavirus
  • Year 12 pupils at Wycombe’s Royal Grammar School worked from home yesterday after a student in the year group tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday. Headmaster Philip Wayne said the school was taking professional advice and it was hoped the boys would return to school today. Christine McLintock, the head of Sir William Ramsay School in Rose Avenue,  has emphasised to parents and students that pupils must go straight home after school and not socialise with other pupils out of their class bubble in the nearby park during lockdown
  • The Hit or Miss pub in Penn Street has converted itself into a “village shop” for the duration of the lockdown, selling fresh produce and take-away food and drink, as there is no local store in the village. The Horse and Jockey in Tylers Green is providing a takeaway food service on Fridays and Saturdays between 4pm and 8pm – see its Facebook page for details and menu.
  • A murder trial in Oxford which was delayed last week because one of the barristers tested positive for Covid-19 was delayed again when it was due to restart yesterday because the three accused are self-isolating in their prison where an outbreak has been confirmed. The jury was told to return next week.
