Coronavirus update

  • Special appeals were made to young people in Slough last night after Covid cases in the town soared. Last week the number of new cases was 322 per 100,000 population compared to 156 in neighbouring Buckinghamshire. But on Monday this week the Slough figure leapt to 447. “The number of cases among  17 to 21 year olds in Slough is now extremely high and quite frightening,” said health spokeswoman Natasa Pantelic. “Most young people may only suffer mild symptoms, but those who do not take it seriously are fuelling the rise in cases.”
  • The latest figures for Buckinghamshire show the number of new cases (156 per 100,000 population) is still lower than neighbouring areas. In Oxfordshire it is 170; in Windsor and Maidenhead 187; Hillingdon 217; Northamptonshire 237; and Hertfordshire 159.
  • Domestic violence in the three months to the end of September increased by 16 per cent in the Chilterns and South Bucks area compared to the same three months last year says a police report to Buckinghamshire Council. The period covers the time between lockdowns and police fear incidents will increase further during the current lockdown.
  • Neighbourhood police, who have had to suspend their regular classroom visits to primary schools,  began a series of virtual presentations in local schools yesterday.
  • The Potters Arms in Winchmore Hill is holding a Zoom pub quiz tonight – see its Facebook page for details.
