Coronavirus update

  • It’s touch and go whether Penn Fair will arrive around its usual date of 16 September next week, especially with new social restrictions from next Monday. Some local travelling fairs have gone ahead this summer whereas others have not. UPDATE: Chepping Wycombe Parish Council has confirmed the fair will not be arriving this year.
  • Local pubs are adjusting to the “new normal”. This is the position today, but bear in mind things may change with next week’s new restrictions:

The Red Lion in Penn is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but open regular hours and serving food for the rest of the week.

The Horse and Jockey in Tylers Green has resumed its pub quiz on the first Thursday of every month

The Old Queen’s Head in Penn has developed an app enabling customers to have drinks delivered to them at their table although customers can still order the traditional way at the bar. The restaurant is open Wednesday to Sunday

The Crown in Penn is open seven days a week and serving food at a limited number of tables.

The Squirrel in Penn Street revised its opening hours this week, from noon to 11pm seven days a week. Food served every day.

The Hit or Miss in Penn Street is also open seven days a week with a full lunch and dinner menu.

The Mayflower in Penn Road, Hazlemere has extended its menu, with food available every day.

The Royal Standard of England in Forty Green and the Potters Arms in Winchmore Hill are serving food every day

  • The Roald Dahl museum in Great Missenden reopens tomorrow. Waddesdon Manor partly reopens next Wednesday (16th) with a one-way route through the ground floor. Pre booking essential. Hughenden Manor has reopened this week with pre-booked timed entry slots. Cliveden’s grounds remain open but pre-booking is necessary. The cafe and refreshment kiosk are offering take-away drinks and snacks.
  • Chiltern Railways introduced more rail services this week and says it is running at 93 percent of its pre-lockdown service. The Penn to High Wycombe Arriva bus service (31)  has not resumed its pre-lockdown timetable, running half-hourly services in the morning and evening peak and hourly services in-between. Face masks must be worn on all public transport.
  • Buckinghamshire Council and the local health authority have devised a Local Outbreak Plan to take action in the event of a spike in coronavirus cases in a particular area. The council reopened its family centres this week on an appointment-only basis; youth drop-in centres will open for one day a week from next week.
  • Bucks NHS Trust is reopening a number of community health services this month. Figures last week showed that the Covid outbreak has caused the number of patients waiting for routine treatment to soar. The Kings Fund said that in Buckinghamshire 12 per cent of patients were waiting longer than 18 weeks for non-urgent treatment before the outbreak.  Now it’s 51 per cent.
  • Buckinghamshire schools confirmed this week that the Eleven-Plus exam, which is normally taken about now, will be sat in the first week of November, with the results announced on 30 November.
  • As more people are tested for coronavirus the number of new confirmed cases is beginning to rise, even though not all may have felt ill. Last week there were 24 new cases confirmed in the Wycombe area, including three in Tylers Green. There were 19 new cases in the Amersham area, which takes in Penn, and five in the Beaconsfield area. The increases are in line with neighbouring areas.
