Coronavirus update

  • A walk-through coronavirus testing site was set up in the grounds of Buckinghamshire New University in the centre of High Wycombe yesterday and will remain there for the foreseeable future. People with the virus symptoms must book an appointment first – it is not a ‘drop-in” site.
  • Following new advice from the church authorities yesterday, there now WILL be a short Remembrance Sunday ceremony around the Penn war memorial on Sunday. It starts at 10.50am and attendees are asked to observe social distancing. Details for St Margaret’s, Tylers Green are expected shortly.
  • Tylers Green Village Hall closes tonight for the duration of the new lockdown. Garden centres and big DIY stores will be open tomorrow and through the lockdown, although any restaurants in them are likely to be shut.
  • The Red Lion in Penn is resuming its take-away service between Thursday and Saturdays between 5.30 and 8pm, starting tomorrow. The Canny Cafe in Rose Avenue  is also providing a take-away service. JJ’s in School Road, Tylers Green is continuing its take-aways.
  • The management at Wycombe’s Eden shopping centre said last night that a number of “non-essential” stores are open for click and collect services from tomorrow.  Essentials, the hardware store at Hazlemere’s Cosy Corner, says it will stay open until the end of the week as a trial to see if they can maintain safety in-store. There’s a one way system and customers will be limited.
  • The National Trust will keep open its grounds at Cliveden, Hughenden, Stowe and Greys Court during the new lockdown, but visitors are advised to book in advance. Football teams involved in grassroots football, including Penn and Tylers Green FC, were told yesterday that matches will be suspended until 2 December. The Chiltern Society has suspended all its walking and cycling group activities.
  • Wexham Park Hospital said yesterday that women giving birth will be allowed a birthing partner with them during the new lockdown. Stoke Mandeville Hospital is currently allowing two birthing partners with pregnant mums during labour and birth. The Wycombe Birth Centre remains closed until the end of January.

Local news

Manager changeover – Tina Brown of The Chase, Tylers Green, retires as manager of Tylers Green Village Hall today after 20 years. Her replacement is Emma Byrne, of Kings Ride, Tylers Green.

Eleven plus – Year 6 children have been sitting their 11 plus examination this week, delayed from the second week in September. The results will be known at the end of the month.

Further objections – In a new analysis of its objection to the outline planning permission to build around 1,000 houses in the Gomm Valley, between Hammersley Lane and Cock Lane, the Pimms Action Group – a residents group around the Pimms Grove area – says that small shops planned in the development will not be supported because of the recently opened Aldi supermarket nearby.

In addition, the group says the proposed restaurant in the development is unlikely to be viable.  It says: “The area around the valley has an abundance of restaurants fighting for survival.  No more are required.”
