The champagne corks were popping at Penn and Tylers Green Football Club on Monday night – and in many a living room – when Wycombe Wanderers beat local rivals Oxford United in a deserted Wembley Stadium to qualify for the second tier of English football for the first time in its 130 year history. Surreal or what.
I don’t know what it is about football that reduces its fans – normally calm, rational people – to tears at moments such as this, but manager Gareth Ainsworth and his band of warriors certainly knew how to turn on the taps on Monday night. It has been one heck of a journey for Chairboys fans – specially for the many in this community who have been following the team since its amateur days in the 60s and early 70s – but not a single one of them will regret it. Everyone associated with the club thorougly deserves their moment in the sun.
